Feminine Earth-Sky Relationship of Snake Effigy Mounds: Recovery, Sharing and Preservation

Turtle Island’s mound-building cultures over the last two millennia intended to preserve a long-lasting, Sky-Earth, Solar-Lunar relationship to the feminine mounds and watery caves along riverscapes at 4 levels of cosmology: the local, regional, continental and global. Unfortunately, colonization and destruction of these many thousands of feminine birth mounds has meant significant spiritual, cultural and ceremonial loss. This research looks at local and regional examples where it has not only been recovered, but also successfully communicated and shared with the next generation of Native Skywatchers in an ethnoastronomy and archaeoastronomy University undergraduate course at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
