He Hononga Whenua he Oranga TangataFrom the land comes life
An exploration linking Papakāinga (Māori communal housing), health and wellbeing was held with the Matekuare whānau from Te Whaiti, New Zealand. The aim was to elicit whānau aspirations for a Papakāinga on their ancestral land. As a result of their story telling a new proverb emerged. The proverb is a unique environmental health indicator linking the cultural identity and health and wellbeing of the whānau.
In this workshop we will share stories of links between the land, and health wellness, from participants’ cultural understandings. We will generate and share proverbs that capture the essence of indigenous health and wellbeing knowledge.
