How can a mātauranga Māori based Heke Ngaru contribute to flourishing whānau?

Tangaroa and Te Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa feature significantly in the lives of ancient and contemporary Māori. We have a deep and enduring relationship in this domain evidence by our voyaging, fishing and ritualised approaches to these endeavours. Heke ngaru (surfing) is an under-explored activity in this domain, despite evidence of Māori riding waves pre-European contact.
This workshop will draw upon the preliminary findings of a study that 1) explored and compiled mātauranga Maori relevant to heke ngaru; and 2) investigated engaged ways to effectively and supportively transfer mātauranga to Māori youth; and 3) subsequently considered the cultural health and wellbeing benefits of heke ngaru.
