Indigenous Student Advocacy and Activism on Community College Campuses

This workshop will provide a history and model for creating Indigenous spaces and learning opportunities on Community College campuses in California. It will describe the actions that students took to assertively request visibility and representation at Sierra College in Northern California leading to the establishment of a Native American and Pacific Islander Club, hiring of Indigenous Faculty, developing courses in Native American Studies, hiring a Tribal Liaison, working with Tribes on sacred site protection, acquiring a resource room for Native students, and designing and advocating for a future commemorative garden on campus to honor and recognize the local Nisenan people.
