Māʻawe Pono – Indigenous Research grounded in Hawaiian Values

This presentation explicates a Hawaiian research methodology grounded in ancient Hawaiian traditions and values, which urges researchers to walk on the trail of honor and responsibility, referred to as ka māʻawe o ka pono in Hawaiian. Māʻawe Pono was developed by the presenter and thousands of Hawaiian co-researchers over the past 20 years to measure the impact of Hawaiian-focused education with Aloha (EA) on native Hawaiian students, and more recently to develop EA Ecoversity. Māʻawe Pono is also being utilized by researchers at UH West-Oʻahu and their community collaborators to stimulate food sovereignty on the Waiʻanae Coast.
