Ngā tapuwae o te haka – Māori perspectives on haka in sport

While haka has done much to set the precedent for normalising Māori culture in sport globally, Māori need to consider ways to appropriately safeguard our cultural practices. This presentation will draw on key Māori concepts to examine how recent global forces are encouraging us to consider the ‘new face of kaitiakitanga’ in a contemporary world. It will be an interactive session exploring the perceived benefits and risks associated with the use of haka in sport contexts, to provide guidance and further provocations about its continued use in future.
