Raising Rangatira – bringing up children in the language of our ancestors

Re-normalising the Māori language in Aotearoa/New Zealand presents considerable challenges for families and communities in a society where English is ubiquitous.

However, the reclamation of our language is a powerful intergenerational healing process, an integral part of maintaining our identity as Māori, and is central to self-determination or rangatiratanga. In this presentation, we will share our family experiences of rediscovery and renaturalisation of our native language, and will describe both the obstacles overcome and the enablers encountered along our journey raising children in the language of our ancestors.
