Substance Abuse and Trauma Amongst Native Hawaiians
The Big Island Substance Abuse Council (BISAC) treats individuals (adolescents to adults) dealing with behavioral health issues (e.g. substance and alcohol abuse and mental health issues). Currently, 65% of the population treated by BISAC identify as Native Hawaiians. Trauma is commonly experienced by our clients who are often diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. About 90% of the individuals served have traumatic histories. BISAC’s holistic approach provides specialized services which helps clients work on their substance abuse and any other co-occurring issues (e.g. trauma). The lecture will help provide insight on the: 1) connection between substance abuse treatment and trauma and 2) focus on interventions used to treat this population.
