“We Know How to Do This” – How First Nations and a Native Hawaiian Health Organizations Are Pushing Back Against Western Colonial Policymaking Models

This research project examines how two Indigenous-led health organizations, Papa Ola Lokahi from Hawaii, US and All Nations Healing Hospital from Saskatchewan, CAN, are breaking new ground by utilizing culturally and community grounded policymaking approaches for delivering effective health services to their respective communities. Using an Indigenous research methodology, this study privileges Indigenous voices and ways of knowing by engaging in ceremony, “talking story” with community partners and utilizing an insurgent education approach throughout all knowledge translation. The project seeks to discover (1) whether Indigenous policymaking models exist and if so, (2) to what extent existing models similar or different.
